According to UNEB Chairman Prof. Celestine Obua, the 2024 exams saw a 28.4% rise in the number of candidates, with 142,000 students sitting for the exams, compared to 110,566 candidates in 2023. This increase reflects the growing interest in advanced education across the country.

The results also revealed a positive trend in the number of candidates participating in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. Although students pursuing humanities still outnumber those choosing STEM subjects, the number of students opting for STEM has been steadily increasing.

Prof. Obua emphasized the need for this trend to continue, highlighting the importance of creating a pool of students for tertiary institutions to select from for science programs.

In terms of academic performance, female candidates outperformed their male counterparts, continuing a trend seen in previous years. At the three principal pass level, 43.7% of female candidates achieved this result, compared to 34% of male candidates.

Female candidates also led at the two principal pass level, which qualifies students for university admission, with 71.2% passing, compared to 61.1% of males.

The results also indicated a positive shift in student commitment to their education, with the number of students who did not report for exams decreasing. Additionally, the 2024 UACE exams recorded the least number of examination malpractice compared to other previous national exams.

With two principal passes being the minimum requirement for university admission, 92,273 students qualify for university placement this year. The upward trend in female performance underscores the growing empowerment of young women in Uganda's education system.
