Uganda Airlines Launches Direct Flights to London Gatwick
Uganda Airlines has announced the launch of its highly anticipated direct flight route from Entebbe International Airport to London Gatwick.
This significant milestone marks the airline's international expansion and is expected to boost trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges between Uganda and the United Kingdom.
The inaugural flight is scheduled for May 18, 2025, making London the airline's 17th route and third destination outside Africa, following Dubai and Mumbai. Uganda Airlines CEO Jennifer Bamuturaki expressed her excitement, stating, "I'm elated and excited to announce the dates for the long-awaited direct flights to London by Uganda Airlines."
The airline plans to operate four weekly non-stop services, catering to the growing demand for seamless travel between the two nations. Research indicates that destination traffic between Uganda and the UK stands at approximately 90,000 passengers annually.
The choice of London as a destination reflects the robust travel demand between Uganda and the UK. Mr. Adedayo Olawuyi, Chief Commercial Officer of Uganda Airlines, emphasized the strategic importance of the route, saying, "The launch of a direct new route to London will shorten the journey from 16 hours to just 9 hours, and we are sure that it will enhance our trade, education, and tourism opportunities."
This direct connection is expected to significantly reduce travel time, making it easier for business travelers, students, and tourists to move between the two nations. The new route aligns with Uganda Airlines' broader expansion strategy, as outlined in recent reports.
Since its relaunch in 2019, the airline has steadily grown its network, now serving destinations across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Plans are also in place to explore additional routes to cities like Lusaka, Harare, Cape Town, and Jeddah, further solidifying its position as a key player in regional and international aviation.
Uganda Airlines currently operates a fleet of seven aircraft, including Airbus A330s and CRJ-900s, and has established itself as a reliable carrier since resuming operations. The introduction of the Entebbe-London Gatwick route underscores the airline's commitment to fostering stronger ties between Uganda and the global market.
