More To Know About Archbishop Janaan Luwumu

Archbishop Janani Luwum, a prominent Anglican preacher, was brutally murdered on the orders of former Ugandan dictator Iddi Amin in 1977.

Luwum's crime was speaking out against Amin's regime and its countless frightfulness. Luwum, who served as the archbishop of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Boga-ZaΓ―re, was a vocal critic of Amin's government.

He used his platform to condemn the regime's human rights abuses and injustices, earning him the admiration of many Ugandans.

In a courageous move, Luwum delivered a radio address on Christmas Day in 1976, denouncing Amin's regime and its brutal tactics. Although the sermon was censored, Luwum's message resonated with many, and he became a unifying figure for Catholics and Protestants alike.

Amin, famousness for his ruthlessness, responded to Luwum's criticism with brutal force. The archbishop was detained, questioned, and eventually accused of disobedience and arms smuggling. Luwum was killed, along with two government ministers, in a staged car crash, which was later revealed to be a cold-blooded murder orchestrated by Amin.

Luwum's martyrdom has been recognized by the Anglican Church, and efforts have been made to canonize him as a saint. His legacy continues to inspire those fighting against tyranny and oppression, and his courage in the face of overwhelming danger remains a testament to the power of faith and conviction.
